Being a caregiver comes in many different forms. Maybe you’re taking care of your family. Maybe you’re taking care of your parents or another family member. Maybe you’re a teacher, nurse, preacher, manager or volunteer. Whichever speaks true for you, I bet I can relate, with some understanding, to the challenge of living happier and healthier. Burnout is real and it can be hard to recognize when you’re in it.

I’ve hit burnout several times in my adult life. I thought I could achieve my dreams through sheer will. I had the “Wonder Woman” complex, thinking that I could take on the responsibilities for others who needed help. In reality, it was exhausting. Then, I realized that I was not the version of myself that I wanted to be.

I implemented a seriously playful self-care routine that allowed me to reconnect with my inner child, see with a beginner’s mind, listen to my body with more awareness, and trust what I was feeling. I then let that trust lead me through my own exploration of playful experiences and that is how ReSillyance™ was developed. I learned how to play out burnout.

Did you know that play can be more beneficial than force? Think of this. Imagine you are standing in front of a gigantic, unmovable wall and you need to get to the other side. How will you get there? Will you run, full force, into the wall to see if you can move it? Likely not.

You’ll evaluate the tools and skills you already possess. You’ll think of ideas to overcome the obstacle in front of you. You may even experiment trying different tools and skills in new ways. When you do this, you are actually engaging in the process of play. The ability to look at and think of things in different, perhaps new, ways help us to make sense of the world and the challenges we face. As an adult, we do this with more intention, more purpose. It is more than child’s play.
